1. Use Disk Clean up to clean files from hard disk
Free up some space from your hard disk by deleting files with Disk Clean up. It empties the Recycle Bin, removes temporary files and a variety of system files that you no longer use. Follow simple steps like these to use Disk Clean up:
- Click on Start-> All Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools-> Disk Cleanup
- From the Disk Cleanup Options dialog box, choose whether you want to clean up all files lying on your computer or your own files only.
- If you want to clean up your hard drive, select hard drive from the Disk Cleanup: Drive Selection dialog box that appears. Click OK to proceed.
- To delete selected files, click on the Disk Cleanup tab, and then select the check boxes for the files you want to delete.
- Click on OK, and then click Delete files to remove all unnecessary files from your computer.

2. Remove visual effects
Windows Vista is rich in graphical user interface. It has various visual effects to capture one’s attention.
If your operating system is running slowly, you can disable the visual effects settings to increase the speed. There are two options for you- you can either disable visual effects one by one or let Windows Vista disable a bunch in one go! However, there are 20 visual effects you can control through Performance Options. To do so:
- Click on Start->Control Panel-> System Maintenance-> Performance Information and Tools
- Next, click on Adjust visual effects.

Disk Defragmentation consolidates fragmented files on your computer’s hard disk. As you save, delete or change file(s), your hard disk tends to get clouded. - Clicking the Start button-> All Programs-> Accessories-> System Tools, and then clicking Disk Defragmenter
- Click on Defragment Now

4. Limit programs that load while starting up
When Windows start, many programs are loaded automatically. Often programs have default settings to automatically load when your system boots. These programs generally place their icons on the notification area on the task bar. Remove such programs to enhance your system’s start-up speed. Also click on Show Hidden Icons to remove hidden icons of unwanted programs.
